Maine Bills Threaten State's Safety Inspection Program

Maine Bills Threaten State’s Safety Inspection Program

If passed, HB 439 would make Maine's annual vehicle safety inspection program biannual rather than the current annual program.

Two new bills have been introduced to the Maine House (HB 439 and HB 567) that would change or dismantle the state’s current annual safety inspection program.

If passed, HB 439 would make Maine’s annual vehicle safety inspection program biannual rather than the current annual program. The bill is co-sponsored by State Rep. Richard Cebra who sponsored the virtually identical and unsuccessful HB 167.

Cebra is also the sponsor of HB 567, which would eliminate the entire vehicle safety inspection program in Maine.

The Automotive Service Association opposes both of these bills as a staunch supporter of vehicle safety inspections, the association said. Both bills are scheduled for committee hearings this week, and ASA encourages interested parties in Maine to visit TakingTheHill.com (click “Alerts”) to contact their state representatives in opposition to these bills.
