Presentation: Playbook, Create It & Maintain It

Presentation: Playbook, Create It & Maintain It

Tony Wisler of DRIVE explained the importance of facilitating a playbook for shops.

As an owner you know a great deal about what needs to be done and how to do it in your shop, but what about the rest of your team? From hiring to on-boarding, training and building team agreement, it all comes down to a great Playbook.

On Saturday, September 16 Tony Wisler, director of training for DRIVE presented at the Westgate Resort & Casino conference center, discussing all things “Playbooks” with shop owners in attendance.

“As a DRIVE instructor I have delivered the Playbook material many times,” Wisler said. “It is one of my favorite subjects and I have seen many shop owners have huge realizations about the power of a Playbook. Understanding it and using it is critical for reaching your goals and having the life you, your crew and your family deserve,” Wisler continued.

“Does anyone have experience creating a playbook?” Wisler asked the audience. “I want to make sure you understand what exactly a playbook is. It’s everything you need to know, or already know, that your team must know.”

Wisler went on to ask how shop owners can reach a level where things are operational without the shop owner present, also known to DRIVE members as Level 4. Wisler said it’s as simple as just having reference material, a policy book, that is easy and available to find.

“It’s everything you want your employees to know,” Wisler added. “Build a culture where your employees want to be responsible,” Wiser said. “The less they need to rely on you, the less you need to micromanage them and they like that,” Wisler continued.

Wisler explained if policies are not in a written or digital playbook, shop owners are continuously having to repeat themselves. Wisler says the value of a playbook is motivation, employee success, and new employee on-boarding.

“One of the things you build with a great playbook is team spirit,” Wisler said. “Never write a policy when you’re angry. Unfortunately, that may be when you want to do it most,” Wisler added, earning laughs from the audience.

Wisler told the audience it’ll be difficult to have a fully operational business without a developed playbook. Wisler added there are two separate categories for playbooks as well. Categories include a playbook for everybody in the shop or a playbook for specific job titles. “If you don’t put it in writing, it’s not real,” Wisler said.

Wisler explained with the DRIVE Playbook app, shop owners are able to seamlessly upload their policies for the entire team to see, along with other notable features like assignments, surveys and checklists.

Wisler finished off the presentation by reiterating that shop owners have the DRIVE team as a resource whenever they begin creating their playbook.
