North Carolina Senate Bill Dilutes Vehicle Safety Inspection Program

North Carolina state Sen. Stan Bingham, R-Dist. 33, has introduced legislation that would harm the North Carolina state safety inspection program by exempting new vehicles from testing for their first six years. North Carolina Senate Bill 123, titled “Eliminate Motor Vehicle Safety Inspections,” was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce.

ASA Opposes Proposed Georgia Automotive Repair Tax

Legislation has been proposed in the Georgia House of Representatives that would create a sales tax on many services of small businesses. If passed, the bill, House Bill 385, would create a new sales tax on the labor costs on services performed by automotive repair facilities.

National Car Safety Inspection Standards Proposed

U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) introduced a new bill that would establish national standards for state-level vehicle safety inspections. House Bill 229 – the Michael Jon Newkirk Transportation Safety Enhancement Act of 2011 – would require states to establish minimum annual vehicle safety inspection programs or lose specific federal funds.

Senate Passes Small Business Lending Fund

The Senate has passed “The Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010,” H.R. 5297, by a vote of 61-38. The bill originally passed the U.S. House of Representatives June 28, 2010, and it now returns to the House for final passage. The bill creates a $30 billion lending fund that will be distributed to regional banks that will in turn lend to small businesses.
