The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced that it will soon issue a proposed rule that would eliminate the use of 134a as a refrigerant in new motor vehicles and as an aerosol in many consumer products.

Federal-Mogul has announced the addition of nearly 70 parts to its MOOG Steering and Suspension product line. The latest expansion of the MOOG line includes more than 50 parts for late-model foreign nameplate passenger vehicles from BMW, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Toyota and other manufacturers.

NHTSA Announces Vehicle-To-Vehicle Communication Policy

Anthony Foxx, U.S. Department of Transportation secretary, announced recently that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will begin taking steps toward a proposed mandate requiring new vehicles to contain vehicle-to-vehicle technology (V2V). NHTSA notes that this technology will “improve safety by allowing vehicles to ‘talk’ to each other and ultimately avoid many crashes altogether by exchanging basic safety data, such as speed and position, 10 times per second.”

Massachusetts Considering Tire Aging Bill

Recently, a joint committee in the Massachusetts legislature heard testimony on a proposed tire aging bill. The bill would make it illegal for passenger vehicles to have tires more than six years old. In addition, the bill would amend the state’s vehicle emissions testing requirements to include safety testing of most vehicle components. If passed, safety testing would include tires, brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust systems, lights and seat belts.
