following five scholarships to be awarded this year: the Emil Stanley Merit
Award, the BODYSHOP BUSINESS Magazine Scholarship, the Richard Cossette/Gale
Westerlund Memorial Scholarship, the Tom B. Babcox Memorial Scholarship and the
Arrowhead Specialty Markets “High Octane” Scholarship.

Three scholarships help pay expenses for recipients to attend the 2014
International Autobody Congress & Exposition (NACE) in Detroit, which takes
place July 30 through Aug. 2. These scholarships are the Emil Stanley Merit
Award, the BODYSHOP BUSINESS Magazine Scholarship and the Richard Cossette/Gale

The $1,000 Emil Stanley Merit Award is awarded annually to an individual who
works in an Automotive Service Association (ASA) Collision Division
member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their
business skills through management education. The 2014 award marks the 24th
year in which AMI and ASA have honored Emil Stanley with this commemorative
management-oriented scholarship.

The $1,000 BODYSHOP BUSINESS Magazine Scholarship is also presented annually.
AMI’s resource development effort, EXCEL, in conjunction with Babcox Media,
established the scholarship that is awarded to an ASA Collision Division
member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their
business skills through management education.

an ASA Collision Division member-business in good standing and who displays a
desire to improve their business skills through management education. The
scholarship, offered in conjunction with ASA, was created to honor the
contributions these two industry leaders made to AMI, ASA and the collision
repair industry.

The remaining two annual scholarships help cover expenses for recipients to
attend the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) in Detroit, July 31
through Aug. 2. These scholarships are the Tom B. Babcox Memorial Scholarship
and the Arrowhead Specialty Markets “High Octane” Scholarship.

The $1,000 Tom B. Babcox Memorial Scholarship was established by EXCEL, in
conjunction with Babcox Media. It is awarded to an ASA Mechanical Division
member-business in good standing and who displays a desire to improve their
business skills through management education.

The $1,000 Arrowhead Specialty Markets “High Octane” Scholarship was

Comebacks are a hot topic today. You need to track
all comebacks, determine the reason (tech error, part error, training issue,
other) and then calculate the true cost of the comeback.
Here are a few things to consider:
• The loss of time when performing the comeback; time that the tech can use to
perform other work and generate profit;
• The misc costs, such as overhead costs, supplies, cleaners, etc.;
• Towing costs, rental, etc.;
• Cost to morale;
• Reputation damage; and
• Reduction to your profit margin.
For every part issue, you need to
inform your supplier. Sit down with suppliers on a regular basis. Don’t return defective
parts until you have listed the parts, and maintain a report. Document
everything.
Part issues are increasing. Every shop
owner I speak to is frustrated over this.
Remember, comebacks kill your bottom
line. The more comebacks you have, the more they’re killing your profits.
